RECREATION & PARKS

Large oak trees dominate the streetscape, with azaleas, dogwoods and crepe myrtles offering splashes of color in the spring and summer. Homes are set close to the street, offering neighbors the easy opportunity to talk with each other or wave to dog-walkers, families out for a stroll or runners taking advantage of quiet, shady paths.

Hollywood Park, located in the middle of the neighborhood, boasts a children’s playground with swings and slides, an open grassy area, a covered and lighted picnic shelter and raised garden beds of flowers and herbs cultivated by residents. The park also plays host to several well-attended events each year, including a Fourth of July parade, a Halloween gathering, an Easter Egg hunt, an annual picnic and movie nights. Neighbors know each other and look out for each other, whether searching for a lost pet or sending out a neighborhood email offering tickets to a University of South Carolina athletic or cultural event.

FUN FACT

What is believed to be the first attached automobile garage in Columbia (built in 1924) was in Hollywood-Rose Hill.

what’s in a name?

The neighborhood’s name comes from two separate planned developments — Rose Hill and Hollywood. Rose Hill gets its name from the Rose Hill Greenhouses, which in 1902 were located near where Hollywood Park is today. The Rose Hill neighborhood was established in 1914. W.E. Hollowell’s Holly Realty Co. started developing Hollywood in 1924. It had larger homes than Rose Hill, and the street names used the “wood” suffix (Hollywood, Crestwood, Southwood, Maplewood and Pinewood).
