FOREST ACRES

neighborhood

Forest Acres, sitting just 3 miles from downtown Columbia, calls itself a “city within a city.” And in this small city, you’ll find an eclectic mix of family-friendly neighborhoods, home to everyone from young professional newcomers to empty-nest retirees who have lived in Forest Acres their entire lives

Incorporated in 1935, Forest Acres has grown up adjacent to Columbia, but with its own vibe, its own upscale shopping areas, and its own identity.  Forest Acres is actually a collection of several smaller subdivisions, including Jackson Heights, also known as The College Streets, since the roads are named for South Carolina colleges including Furman, Coker and Clemson, with Citadel Park in the middle.

Forest Acres is an easy, quick commute to downtown Columbia, USC and Fort Jackson, and it offers easy access to Interstate77, the highway that runs between Columbia and Charlotte.

RECREATION & PARKS

Residents are drawn to the community feel of Forest Acres, where neighbors know each other and gather for activities and events such as outdoor concerts, 5K races and farmers markets.

FUN FACT

Forest Acres has its roots in the days of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, incorporating as a city in 1935 when the federal Work Projects Administration offered grants to pay for road and bridge construction and municipal water lines. Only incorporated governments could apply for WPA money, and a petition was circulated among area residents to incorporate what was then a 2-square-mile area.

what’s in a name?

The two men who pushed for the incorporation of the land east of Columbia – John Hughes Cooper and James Henry Hammond – had different ideas for what to name their new town. Cooper wanted to name it Forest Acres and Hammond liked Quinine Hill. The name was voted on by the residents who signed the petition to incorporate. Forest Acres won.
