CANAL PLACE

neighborhood

The community of Canal Place offers an opportunity to enjoy a city lifestyle while living in a new development with a sleek, suburban feel and plenty of updated amenities.

It’s a neighborhood of single-family homes, mostly Craftsman bungalows that have retained their architectural integrity and historic appearance nearly a century after they were built. The homes, with their covered front porches and welcoming feel, are nestled on lightly traveled streets with mature hardwoods forming a lush canopy overhead. Cottontown is an example of an early planned suburb whose appearance hasn’t been greatly altered even as Columbia has grown and changed over the past 100 years. Add in Cottontown’s location just north of the downtown business district, along with a growth spurt of neighborhood coffee shops, cool and casual restaurants, breweries, and beer gardens, and it’s easy to see why the area is drawing raves from newcomers and holding its appeal to long-time residents.

Also known as Bellevue, the neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places and is protected as an architectural conservation district by the City of Columbia. Along with its proximity to Columbia’s downtown business district, it is close to the BullStreet District and the revitalized North Main Street area. Cottontown is a short drive to the Vista, the University of South Carolina, and Five Points, and has easy access to I-26 and I-20.

RECREATION & PARKS

Canal Place residents have easy access to the Three Rivers Greenway at the Columbia Canal access point off Broad River Road or the access near Riverbanks Zoo. The greenway has paved trails, boardwalks, and overlooks and is a popular spot for walkers, bicyclists, and runners.

Earlewood Park, a 66-acre urban forest, is nearby Canal Place. It includes a community center, amphitheater, walking track, tennis courts, baseball fields, and a disc golf course that’s considered one of the best in the region. There is even a 2-acre dog park, NoMa Bark Park.

The neighborhood is in walking distance to Marshall Park, a small community park at Lincoln, Union, Florence, and Ridgefield streets, perfect for a spring picnic or a ride on the playground swings.

what’s in a name

It’s easy to figure out where Canal Place gets its name: the Columbia Canal, which was built in 1824 by Irish immigrants to allow river traffic to bypass the rapids where the Saluda and Broad rivers meet and form the Congaree River. The idea was to provide direct water transportation route to the Upstate and connect Columbia to the Charleston port. But by the 1840s, railroads made the canal obsolete as a means of transportation. Now the canal is part of Columbia’s riverfront walkways and parks.
