WHEELER
HILL

neighborhood

Wheeler Hill offers the modern conveniences of newer homes with a classic neighborhood feel – all in walking distance of the University of South Carolina, Five Points and downtown Columbia.

The residential neighborhood was developed during a large urban renewal project advocated by the university and the City of Columbia in the late 1970s and 1980s. The result in the Wheeler Hill neighborhood, which is just off Wheat and Pickens street on the edge of the university’s campus, is an affluent development with city-style houses and an upscale vibe.

RECREATION & PARKS

Wheeler Hill is home to university professors and other professionals, some who take advantage of the convenient location by walking or bicycling to USC or the office each day. It’s an easy walk to Five Points for dining or nightlife, and DiPrato’s Delicatessen on Pickens Street right in the neighborhood is a popular lunch and brunch spot.
Maxcy Gregg Park is located on the edge of the neighborhood, a city-style park with formal gardens and a short walking trail along the creek that leads into Five Points. The park also has a public pool that offers swim lessons and recreational swimming from May through August. The neighborhood is home to the City of Columbia’s Tennis Center on Whaley Street, which offers individual and group lessons for all levels of players. It features 14 lighted courts – nine hard and five clay – that offer recreational play, day camps, tournaments and league play.

HOME STATS

The development features mostly two- and three-story townhomes, Charleston-style houses with side porches, Lowcountry cottages, and traditional brick, stucco, and wood-sided houses. Some Wheeler Hill homes offer views of the university and downtown skyline. The large homes are on small lots that require little maintenance, with well-tended yards and gardens filled with colorful shrubbery and flowers. Trees planted when the neighborhood was redeveloped have matured in the past few decades, making the sidewalk lined streets perfect for a stroll.
