SHANDON

neighborhood

The neighborhood of Shandon was first established in 1904 as one of Columbia’s first suburbs. Today, with its well-kept homes, welcoming front porches and walkable, tree-lined streets, it remains one of the capital city’s most popular and sought-after in-town neighborhoods.

Adjacent to the Five Points and Devine Street shopping and entertainment districts and close to the University of South Carolina, the neighborhood is home to everyone from college students to young professionals to retirees. They are drawn to Shandon by the variety of housing, the historic feel, the diversity of residents, and the proximity to restaurants, shopping and downtown Columbia. Shandon is bounded by Harden, Kilbourne and Devine streets and Rosewood Drive, and is in walking, biking or short driving distance to the university and downtown.

RECREATION & PARKS

Stroll through the neighborhood any time of year, and you’ll be struck by the number of people you see walking, jogging and bicycling. The open field and walking track at Hand Middle School, in the middle of the neighborhood, is a popular gathering place with frequent pickup baseball, basketball and soccer games. Shandon is home to dozens of 5K and other road races as its shady streets and gradual hills making it a perfect spot for runners and joggers. The landscape is attractive all year round, but it truly shines in springtime, with color bursting from azaleas, dogwoods, tulips, daffodils and more.

Shandon is home to two neighborhood parks. Sims Park, at Duncan and Bonham streets, features children’s playground equipment, a spray pool in the summer, a picnic shelter, children’s play area, and a basketball court. There is a neighborhood technology center along with a Columbia Police Department substation onsite. On the other side of the neighborhood, Emily Douglas Park at Wheat and King streets has a spray pool that operates in the summer and an amphitheater for evening movies and impromptu student performances. The shady park also has a children’s playground, an open grassy area, and a fenced dog park. Emily Douglas Park’s neighborhood center offers programming such as summer camps and after-school activities.

what’s in a name?

Before it became a popular Columbia neighborhood, Shandon was rolling farmland. The story is that its lush beauty made R.S. DesPortes think of Shandon, Ireland. He apparently also thought calling the area “Shandon” would go over well with R.W. Shand, president of the Columbia Land and Investment Company, who started buying land in Shandon in 1890.

CHURCHES

Many of the city’s oldest and largest churches are located in Shandon including Shandon Presbyterian, Shandon United Methodist, St. Joseph Catholic, St. John’s Episcopal, and Incarnation Lutheran.

HOME STATS

Single-family homes dominate the neighborhood, with no two houses looking exactly the same. There are Craftsman-style bungalows, cottages, two-story American Foursquares, Colonial revivals, and more. Many of the homes were built in the first half of the 20th century, and, even with additions and upgrades, the homes’ classic character remains. Single-family homes, as well as duplexes and small apartments, complete the neighborhood, with no two houses looking exactly the same. Many offering renters a chance to live in a home with historic charm and hardwood floors.
