Adjacent to the Shandon neighborhood, Sherwood Forest is an easy walk, bike ride or short drive to all that Columbia has to offer. Despite its location in the middle of everything, the neighborhood offers a bucolic feel, with winding streets, gently rolling hills, towering trees and well-kept homes.
Developed mostly in the 1940s and 1950s, Sherwood Forest is home to about 700 people – families, young couples, singles and retirees, including a few who have lived in their homes since they were first built. It is common to see walkers, runners and families strolling along the heavily wooded streets that are dotted with azaleas and other colorful shrubbery. There is an active neighborhood association that organizes events such as Halloween parades and block parties.
The jewel of the neighborhood is the W. Gordon Belser Arboretum, a 10-acre nature preserve in the middle of Sherwood Forest that is managed and operated by the University of South Carolina.

Gordon Belser Arboretum, with an entrance on Bloomwood Road, is a nearly 10-acre preserve in the middle of Sherwood Forest that is home to a wide collection of plant communities, a waterfall, botanical garden and many exhibits. The arboretum serves as a field lab for University of South Carolina students, but also is open to the public the third Sunday of each month and at other times for special events.
Two city parks —Heathwood and Sims — are within six blocks of the neighborhood. Heathwood Park offers tennis courts, a children’s playground, spray pool, community center and picnic shelters. Sims Park in Shandon offers a playground, basketball courts, spray pool, picnic areas and a community technology center.

The original large home built by William Gordon “Willie” Belser around 1920 still stands on Kilbourne Road.
