RECREATION & PARKS

Virginia Hylton Park is a true gem in downtown Lexington. It features a paved walking trail, two playgrounds, including one for special needs children, picnic shelters, extensive flower gardens, grills, and an overlook at Twelve Mile Creek. The Icehouse Amphitheater downtown is a 900-seat outdoor venue that hosts community events and concerts. On Saturday mornings, the amphitheater parking lot is transformed into a farmer’s market. Lexington is home to the Blowfish baseball team made up of college players who compete in the Coastal Plain League. Games are played at the Lexington County Stadium, where large crowds come watch America’s pastime on warm summer nights.

For recreation, the big draw is Lake Murray, which is popular with boaters, swimmers, paddleboarders, water skiers, bird watchers, and anglers. The Lexington County Museum collects, preserves, and presents the area’s history, particularly the artifacts and structures made and used in the area before 1865.

FUN FACT

What became the town of Lexington was originally the old Royal township of Saxe Gotha, one of 11 established in 1735 by the Colonial government of King George II. The township was first created as a way to encourage settlement of back-country South Carolina and to form a buffer between Native American tribes to the west and settled plantations to the east in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

what’s in a name?

When the area was a Royal township in the early 1700s, it was named Saxe Gotha, in honor of the marriage of the British Prince of Wales to Princess Augusta of the German state of Saxe Gotha. Lexington County was first established in 1785, and took its name in honor of the Massachusetts Revolutionary War battle.
